I am sometimes asked what the most important thing is about a close personal relationship with the godhead. The simple answer is to have one. This is what I mean.
A close personal relationship with God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit is not a media campaign to boost popularity. It is not a to-do list check-off allowing you to move on to the next thing. It is something you do—every day. Jesus said it this way.
He told his disciples not to make a production out of praying. Do not gather a crowd and orate a scripted speech like a professional actor. In one translation it states something like, it may be good theater, but it will not get you anywhere with God. Rather, Jesus continued, when you want to talk with God, find a quiet place where you can be alone, undistracted, and simply open up your heart.
Another question I am asked is what does a close personal relationship with God look like? The simple answer is it looks like you and God spending time together. This is what I mean.
My wife and I have a good relationship. Because of our schedules, there are days that we only see each other for less than an hour. So, I can tell you in order to have a good relationship, spend large amounts of time apart. That probably will not work out well.
In like manner, I can tell you get up early, read three chapters in your Bible, one in the Old Testament, one in the New Testament, and one in the Old Testament book of Proverbs. Then, find a hide-away place and pray non-stop for 30-minutes. Follow that by writing down the thoughts that come to your mind.
You can try that, and maybe even have some success with it. I lived the above routine for many years and did not have a close personal relationship with the godhead. I thought that I had one, but in reality, I had a very disciplined lifestyle (nothing wrong with a disciplined life).
A close personal relationship with God (or the godhead as I am calling it) is about a desire to know him and do whatever I have to do for that to happen. It is the same for you. How badly do you what to be close to God? How important is it for you to know his heart? Your honest answers will determine the depth of your relationship.
For me, it has been important enough that I have had times where I realize that I am in the presence of God the Father, or God the Son, or God the Holy Spirit. This is when I began speaking about a close personal relationship with the godhead. Prior to that, it was simply a close personal relationship with God.
Maybe your commitment is not that deep, then go for the depth you are willing to reach. What is important is having a close personal relationship—with God.
