With all the tension and unrest in the world today, it seems fitting to press the “pause” button, and think about your father, or dad, or pops. It might be that you and your dad do not have the best relationship; perhaps you have not spoken with each other in years; it could be possible that your dad has passed away.

Whatever the case, today, above all days, at this time, in the uncertainty that is defining the year 2020, allow Father’s day to bring healing into your heart. A close personal relationship with the godhead is about honest, open dialogue with God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Take a moment to ask the Holy Spirit to give you the love and compassion of Father God; then ask him to give you the forgiveness of Jesus the Son. Speak out the words, “Dad, you hurt me,” allowing all the bitterness, anger, and hatred to spew out of your heart, out of your mouth, into the air. Then, with the strength given you by the Lord, say, “Dad, I choose to forgive you,” allowing the presence and peace of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit to engulf you.

For those who do not have such issues with dad, make sure to find a way to honor him today. I recently read that the lockdown has allowed children to reconnect with dad. The article said that spending for him would average around $200 this year, up over 50 percent from previous years.

Although gifts are nice, a heartfelt conversation means more than money buys. In our case, my siblings and I are having a videoconference in honor of our dad, who passed a couple of years ago.

Whatever the case, can you imagine the impact of everyone around the world laying down arms—both physical and verbal—to take a moment to reach out to dad, either affirming him for his efforts or forgiving him for the pain he caused?

Happy Father’s day dad!
