Start with God – the first step in learning is bowing down to God; only fools thumb their noses at such wisdom and learning.
Proverbs 1:7 The Message
Start with God
What does that mean? How do you “start” something with God? You can’t see, hear, or touch him, so how can you “start” something with him?
The first step in learning is bowing down to God. To “bow” means to pay homage, to show respect and reverence.
God is the creator of all things. Humanity is his prize creation. You and I have been made to be like our creator God.
We are to honor him by acknowledging his greatness and submitting our lives to his plans and purposes.
The Wisdom of Solomon tells us this is the first step to learning, a simple act of worship.
There are many reasons we do not bow down to God. There could be too much hurt, abuse, abandonment, or rejection.
Such negativity in our lives would naturally make us susceptible to the lies of the adversary, the devil.
As such, this simple act of worship could be tough.
For we walk by faith, not by sight.
II Corinthians 5:7 King James Version
Walk by faith
Faith is the belief and assurance that God is who he says he is and will do what he says he will do.
Faith has been built into human DNA. For example, the first time you sat in a new chair, you probably did not think it would hold you. Am I right?
You had faith that the chair builder built it sturdy enough to support you.
This is a simple act of faith.
Faith is necessary in a close personal relationship with the Godhead. It is also important to set yourself free from the negativity mentioned earlier.
You must believe the Bible—which takes faith—when it says to cast all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. I Peter 5:7 The New King James Version.
The Message Bible translates II Corinthians 5:7 this way.
It’s what we trust in but don’t yet see that keeps us going.
II Corinthians 5:7 The Message
Faith is what we trust in, even though we have yet to see it work.
Why would any rational person do that?
We believe that God is who he says he is and will do what he says he will do.
We believe because we read stories in the Bible of God working on other people’s behalf.
We trust he will do it for us, even though we have not seen it.
Do what Jesus did.
Jesus spent time with God. He got up early to spend time with him. After speaking with the crowds, he found a solitary place to spend time with him. He talked to God while having conversations with others.
Jesus is God the Son. He came to earth as a man (the male of the species) to accomplish the plan of God the Father.
As a man, he established patterns and routines that you can follow.
He got up early to spend time with him.
Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.
Mark 1:35 New International Version
Spending time with the Lord early can set the stage for your day. It can correct bad attitudes and anxiety about what the day holds or comfort you in a difficult situation.
Spending time with the Lord early can provide you with guidance and direction. It can help you make the right decisions about tough choices.
Spending time with the Lord early can give you a happy face, a joyful song, and spring in your step as you head out to face your day.
After speaking with the crowds, he found a solitary place to spend time with him.
After sending them home, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. Night fell while he was there alone.
Matthew 14:23 New Living Translation
Starting your day with the Lord is essential, but ending your day with him can be more critical.
It can be a way to unwind and detox from a stressful day.
It can set your mind at ease, allowing you to sleep restfully.
It can set your mind on godly thoughts instead of the garbage thoughts that can flood your mind.
He talked to God while having conversations with others.
So they rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, thank you for hearing me.
John 11:41 The New Living Translation
Jesus was not afraid to include his Father in his daily life.
Many times in my day, I say Holy Spirit give me wisdom concerning this.
A relationship is about spending time with someone—in this case, God. It makes sense to include him in your daily life.
That does not mean that you carry on a conversation with him while in a crowded room. Such attention may earn you a less-than-kind response.
However, it does not mean you cannot converse with God throughout your day.
Perhaps you whisper or think, Lord, what would you have me do?
Building a close personal relationship with the Godhead is a process that takes time and patience.
However, a time will come when, like Jesus, you naturally cry out to God in your moment of desperation.
Going a little ahead, he fell on his face, praying, “My Father, if there is any way, get me out of this. But please, not what I want. You, what do you want?”
Matthew 26:39 The Message
But when you start with God by bowing in worship to him, you position yourself to begin your journey.
As you patiently walk through the remaining steps, you eventually find yourself leaning on God through the hardships in life instead of raising an accusatory fist at him.
A close personal relationship with the Godhead is needed now more than ever.
A close personal relationship with the Godhead is a journey. I invite you to follow along. I will pass it along as I learn so you, too, can learn. I hope that as you learn, you can pass it along so that I (and others) might learn.
