ABSOLUTELY NOT!
In a confused world where defining a woman causes a national uproar, Mother’s Day is a day to celebrate your mother.
In a confused world where gender identity is attempting to redefine humanity’s existence, Mother’s Day is a day to recognize your mother.
In a confused world where masculine feminity is celebrated, Mother’s Day is a day to honor the woman who birthed you and raised you.
This day, the second Sunday of May 2024, is a proclamation of celebration established by the U.S. Congress over 100 years ago. It is a national U.S. holiday celebrated worldwide to confer honor on mothers.
Today, Mother’s Day, it doesn’t matter if your mom is or was the best, worst, or struggled to get through; today, you need to honor her.
Consider this
The Apostle Paul says to honor your father and mother.
“Honor your father and mother” is the first commandment that has a promise attached to it, namely, so you will live well and have a long life.”
Ephesians 6:2-3 The Message
The Greek word for honor means to fix a value, to revere, to venerate (regard with feelings of respect and reverence).
So, your challenge is to choose a value to place upon your mother.
It will be easy if she is the best mom.
You will value her highly and gladly show her the reverence she deserves.
It will be difficult if she is the worst mom.
This is the first place the act of your will must be exercised. You must choose to place a value on her that shows her reverence or respect.
You may know her history or may be clueless about it, but you must decide to honor her.
The Apostle Paul offers assistance here.
“Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am.”
Philippians 4:13 The Message
Jesus, God the Son, is standing ready to give you the ability to make the right decision.
Here’s a relatable story
I know a mother who, as a teenager, gave her baby up for adoption. Years later, the child, now a grown man, reached out to her to establish a relationship.
He could have written this woman off as the worst mother, but he chose to fix a value on her and honor her.
They enjoyed several years together until his sudden death. Even though she grieved twice—giving him up for adoption and then his death—his decision to honor his (birth) mother allowed them to have life-changing memories.
It could be unimportant if she is struggling to get through.
Life is challenging, and being a mother today can be extremely overwhelming. I help in a family-only homeless shelter and see overwhelmed moms with several children struggling to make it without a husband or family support.
I see the hopelessness in the eyes of many of their children.
It could be unimportant for them to honor Mom on Mother’s Day.
Jesus has a powerful story to help you.
One day, the religious leaders of the day came running up to Jesus, dragging a woman behind them.
Tossing her at his feet, they began accusing her of sinful acts.
After listening to them briefly, he made a profound statement. He told the group, anyone without sin among you, to hurl a stone at her. (In those days, death by stoning was acceptable)
Of course, they dropped their stones and left.
What happened next is a priceless life lesson.
Jesus asked the woman if anyone accused her threw a stone. (He knew they hadn’t) He then asked if anyone condemned her, and she responded, no one.
Looking her in the eye, he responded, I do not condemn you either but don’t keep sinning.
He found value in her when others chose not to, and he honored her even though she was wrong.
You may not think your mom deserves to be honored, but you must choose to honor her anyway.
You may think she has done wrong, but you must choose to respect her.
You may think she has done nothing worthy of honor, but you must choose to fix a value on her.
Regardless of where you land, decide to honor your mother today.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the beautiful mothers around the globe.
May you be honored and respected with the love of your children, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
