I saw a billboard the other day that read Evidence For God. It showed a baby lying on its stomach, head up, looking right at you.
Perhaps you have seen it or one similar. It is a pro-life ad that has been around for a while.
It caught my attention, and I decided I needed to find out why.
As I prayed, my mind began thinking about the crazy philosophies and twisted ideas about humanity and what is right and wrong.
In today’s world, there is no wrong; almost anything goes. I say almost because the world has condemned the (reported) 5,000 missiles launched into Southern Israel, killing and wounding hundreds of women and children.
Outside of that, boys going into girls bathrooms and raping them is okay (or at least worthy of being covered up by the school board).
Where is God when this happened?
People can illegally enter the country and kill someone, and nothing be done to stop it.
Where is God when this happened?
People can shoot or injure law enforcement, be arrested, and be released in hours.
Where is God when this happened?
People can illegally enter a person’s home and take up residence, and the law is on their side because they produce forged documents.
Where is God when this happened?
The evidence seems overwhelming that either there is NO God or God does NOT care.
So, is there evidence of God?
The short answer is yes.
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
Genesis 1:1 The King James Version
God is a creator, and the Bible says he created earth and all things therein. He set time in motion with seasons and cycles.
He created man (the species, male and female), giving them charge over the earth and the ability to procreate. (The billboard with the baby)
God did these things once—in the beginning (according to the Bible)—thus setting perpetual motion in place.
This means every time you breathe and see nature or animals or other humans, you see evidence of God.
He spoke, and it was created—except for man (the species, male and female), whom he formed using his hands and breath.
God did this once, and you and I are evidence that it is still working, still creating.
However, Jesus addresses the issue of evidence during one of his teachings.
As the crowd swelled, he took a fresh tack: “The mood of this age is all wrong. Everybody’s looking for proof, but you’re looking for the wrong kind. All you’re looking for is something to titillate your curiosity, satisfy your lust for miracles. But the only proof you’re going to get is the Jonah-proof given to the Ninevites, which looks like no proof at all.
What Jonah was to Nineveh, the Son of Man is to this age.
Luke 11:29-30 The Message
Jesus says,
“Everybody’s looking for proof, but you’re looking for the wrong kind.”
Proof is another piece of evidence in which Jesus says you are looking for the wrong kind.
The Proverbs of King Solomon in the Old Testament address this issue.
The skeptic swore, “There is no God! No God! – I can do anything I want!
I’m more animal than human; so-called human intelligence escapes me.
“I flunked ‘wisdom.’ I see no evidence of a holy God.
Has anyone ever seen Anyone climb into Heaven and take charge? grab the winds and control them? gather the rains in his bucket? stake out the ends of the earth? Just tell me his name, tell me the names of his sons. Come on now – tell me!”
The believer replied, “Every promise of God proves true; he protects everyone who runs to him for help.
Proverbs 30:1-5 The Message
The skeptic in Solomon’s story seeks “something to titillate your curiosity, satisfy your lust for miracles,” that Jesus speaks about.
The Jonah story is a lesson in itself, but the short version is this.
Jonah (and Jesus) was nowhere to be found for three days.
Jonah was in the belly of a great fish—likely a whale.
Jesus was in the belly of the earth—a cave used as a tomb.
For three days, there was NO evidence that anything was going on. But, behind the scenes, miraculous things were taking place.
In Jonah, God showed him the importance of going to Nineveh.
Jesus was at work setting right the wrong done by the sin of Adam.
After three days,
Jonah is belched up on the shore near Nineveh.
Jesus is risen from the dead.
The evidence appeared.
Jonah was seen and heard by the entire population of Nineveh.
Jesus was seen and heard by his followers (around 500) for 40 days.
Jesus said you are looking for the wrong kind of evidence
What kind of evidence should you be looking for?
You should look for evidence of God at work within you: your changed life and newfound passion for knowing and learning about him.
In Solomon’s story,
“The believer replied, “Every promise of God proves true; he protects everyone who runs to him for help.”
Proverbs 30:5 The Message
Every promise of God proves true, and everyone who runs to him for help is protected.
You must embrace a promise (which means have faith) before it has any meaning to you. Otherwise, you would care less if it is true or not.
You must believe (faith in an unseen God) that God will protect you; otherwise, why run to him for help?
These things are evidence of a changed life.
For me, I know God is real. I have a lifetime of proof that cannot be shaken.
Although many things happen (like the things I mentioned earlier) that I do not comprehend, they cannot override my experiences with God.
The same is available for you, and a close personal relationship with God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit will get you there.
A close personal relationship with the Godhead is needed now more than ever.
A close personal relationship with the Godhead is a journey. I invite you to follow along. I will pass it along as I learn so you can understand. I hope that as you learn, you can pass it along so that I (and others) might learn.
