I wish I had a dollar for every time I have heard, or read, “In these uncertain times.” It is true that uncertainty abounds on a global scale. However, having a close personal relationship with the godhead means facing the uncertainty with a calmness that is often unsettling to an uncertain world.
The truth is, God is not unsettled, nor uncertain about this time in global history. There is a plan and a purpose for it. Although having a close personal relationship with him is no guarantee of knowing what comes next, (God is not some crystal ball to be rubbed in order to predict the future) it allows peace to settle over you that everything will be okay.
As nations, governments, and societies wrestle with how to reopen, the Christ-follower—through a close personal relationship—walks a quiet path possessing a calm assurance that whatever the next steps will be, there is grace to take them. At one point in King David’s life, God spoke to him to “be still, and know that God is God.” David wrote a song about it; you can find it in the Old Testament book of Psalms.
To be still is the absence of action or activity. There is calmness, a comfort that is present when being still. There is also a trust that God has “got this.” Each of these attributes—calmness, comfort, and trust—are experienced in a close personal relationship. They do not immediately appear; they take time to develop.
Do you suppose that David, the shepherd, was calm when the attacking lion grabbed one of his sheep and took off for the hills? Can you imagine his comfort level being near zero? Trust must have been present for David to take off after the lion to get back his sheep. Some years later, a very confident David tells the King (Saul) that he will go out and fight the Philistine Goliath. While standing on the battlefield, he taunts the giant by telling him the Lord will give him his head; and so he does.
David learned that a close personal relationship with God meant that in uncertain times, he had nothing to worry about. David found calmness, comfort, and trust that enabled him to victoriously rise to the uncertainty.
What a great lesson. Be encouraged no matter where you are in your journey to a close personal relationship with God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. You too will experience calmness, comfort, and trust that will enable you to be victorious in the midst of uncertainty.
